Welcome to Ralph & Julie's online photo albums.

Wednesday, May 16, 2012 On this hot and humid morning, we headed to the Charles Darwin Research Station and Tortoise Breeding Center. We saw many baby tortoises, separated by island species, and two of the most famous tortoises in the world, Lonesome George (the last individual from the Pinta Island species) and Diego (most successful breeder from EspaƱola Island). Lonesome George unexpectedly died about a month after our visit. He was the last of his sub-species and was never successfully bred in captivity. After a walk through town, we headed to the highlands of Santa Cruz. We stopped at a locally owned sugar mill on the way. We also walked through an impressive lava tunnel ending up at the restaurant for lunch. After lunch we walked through the fields searching for wild tortoises, and we found 2, others in our group saw 3.
